Detroit Lot Maps & Rules
Many have asked about grilling and drinking in the parking lots. You can grill, fry and have enclosed fires in many lots throughout the city. Tents and awnings are permitted, and the enjoyment of alcohol is absolutely permitted in most parking lots but not openly on the streets. Be sure to ask the parking lot attendant about their tailgating policy before committing to park there. See the "City Parking Overview" map for many, but not all, parking lots that permit tailgating.
Contrary to popular belief
Downtown Detroit is a very safe city. From the Theatre District to the stadiums, through Greektown to the Renaissance Center and riverfront, you can walk safely and enjoy all the bars and restaurants. A general awareness of your surroundings is needed as in any other other large city on the planet, but besides that, you can enjoy the sites and history of Detroit without much worry.
Detroit is pretty leniant on most things and as long as some form of common sense is being applied, you're pretty much allowed to do it. The city is happy to have you there, so enjoy yourselves and be safe. These guidelines apply to most if not all open-air lots in Detroit, you may, however, find some exceptions with particular lots and parking structures.
Parking can range from $15 - $50 depending on the distance from the stadium.
