Detroit Bars and Watering Holes

When travelling anywhere in the world, the number one question on travellers' minds is, "Where can I get some beer and a good meal?"

Detroit has some fantastic bars and a legendary nightlife. You'll never know who you're going to run into on the streets of the Motor City. Here's a quick list of our favorites to get you started:

BARS (in no particular order):

Motor City Brewing Works - Located just off the Wayne State University campus, this little gem is the oldest and best micro-brew in Detroit.

Atwater Block Brewery - In the tradition of Detroit's historic breweries, the Atwater Block Brewery is synonymous with great Detroit beer. Located in the Rivertown district, it's the perfect place to watch the game or chill on the weekends.

EASTERN MARKET - Home of the largest historic public market district in the nation and home of the best tailgate parties in Detroit.

Bert's Marketplace - Theater, restaurant, jazz club, boxing ring... this is the place to see and be seen.

Vivio's Food & Spirits - World famous bloody marys in Detroit's Eastern Market. Grab some lunch and a shuttle to the game!

GREEKTOWN - Detroit's most famous neighborhood of restaurants, bars and casino. Main corridor along Monroe St.

Old Shillelagh - Legendary Detroit irish bar

Niki's Pizza - Great place for late night food. Just south of Greektown on Beaubien St.

Sweetwater Tavern - Best ribs and chicken wings in the city.

Jacoby's - The place to go for great beer downstairs and great music upstairs.

Bouzouki Lounge - Feeling adventurous? Hit up this gentlemen's club. Always a good time.

The Shelter - Close to the Marriott and site of Eminem's freestyle battles in the movie "Eight Mile." Basement of St. Andrews Hall, entrance in back.

THE THEATER DISTRICT

Hockeytown Cafe - Nextdoor to the Fox Theater and across the street from Comerica Park.

Cheli's Chili - Chris Chelios's popular bar next to Comerica Park

The Elwood - Great historical bar on the best piece of property in Detroit, smack in-between Comerica and Ford Field.

Hard Rock Cafe - Standard Hard Rock stuff.

The Well - Dark, awesome, true Detroit style.

Cobo Joe's - Detroit favorite with some of the best pizza in town.

The Post - Legendary place to hang out before, during and after a Red Wings game.

Nancy Whiskey Pub - This is a 'down home', neighborhood tavern that is visited every week by Detroit's Best Blues and R&B artists.

PLACES TO BUY BEER:

Athens Liquor & Smoke Outlet - If you're hanging out in Greektown, here's your beer store.

Millender Center Food Plaza

Tunnel Liquor & Gifts Shoppe - Probably the closest. Located in the Millender Center across the street from your hotel. Don't remember where in Millender it is, though.

Downtown Detroit Directory - Excellent resource for info and maps.

AtDetroit.net - an excellent discussion board of everything Detroit.

There are many excellent hang-outs that haven't been mentioned here, but you cannot go wrong with visiting any of these bars.
